A quick browser search brings up no less than 240 million smoothie recipes. Needless to say it’s a popular drink to make. Smoothies or “shakes” are typically used as a nutrient booster after a workout, as a meal replacement, during a cleanse or just as a tasty and healthy snack. I personally tend to use smoothies as my morning “break-fast”, meaning it’s the first thing I consume to break my overnight fast.

Smoothies make are an excellent treat, no matter the time of day:

This particular smoothie packs more than 1200 mg Calcium, 5 grams of protein, 11 grams of fiber, and over 200% of your daily needed Beta Carotene, which is the precursor to Vitamin A. Meaning the Beta-carotene in food, converts to your much needed vitamin A which builds strong eyes, aids in tissue and cell repair, helps with infections and is a strong antioxidant.

** Fun Fact: vitamin A was the first vitamin to be officially named, hence the letter A!

Now molasses might be a strange addition – feel free to omit it – but know this. Blackstrap molasses (this type has the most health benefits), are loaded with iron, calcium, magnesium and B vitamins – a great boost at any time of day! They also have sugar so they add a little sweetness, which is why you don’t need more than 1 teaspoon. Feel free to substitute with honey if you have that on hand. Raw, unpasteurized honey will provide the most nutrients.

Instructions

Place all ingredients in a blender.

Blend on high for 40-60 seconds or use the smoothie function if you have it.

If you have a high-powered blender you can use raw carrots and they will blend well.

Otherwise, use cooked carrots but ensure they are completely cooled off. It’s also a nice way to use leftovers as long as they don’t have any spices, oil or dressing on them.

*You can substitute the carrot juice and/or orange juice for more water or even milk for a creamier taste if you want, but this combination gives the best flavor balance in my opinion.

*This quantity is tested and makes a medium-thickness smoothie, but by all means increase the juice or water for a thinner-thickness or add more frozen mangoes for a thicker smoothie that you can even use in a smoothie bowl.

*Add any booster powders you like, such as protein powder of choice, adaptogens or spirulina.
